COMMUNITY FARMING PROJECT – HIRVE MAHARASHTRA

farming projects in India

As promised, here we are with our deployment of a solar system for community farming projects in India. We would love to hear back from you on your thoughts about this project. We will be happy to discuss the scope further if you have a project in mind that deals with community farming projects in India.

You can read here to learn what motivated us to work on community farming projects in India.

Overview of the Project

The 70 farmers on the hills of Hirve, Maharashtra, had just one source of income, farming. In turn, their farming depended on rain, and they could harvest only one crop in one whole year.

The only source of perennial water was in the foothills of the mountain.

Our Solution to the Problem

This project aimed to make the water on the foothills available throughout the year to the 70 farmers on the nearby hills to help them irrigate a second and a third crop.

The Plan and Execution of the project

  • The targeted 70 farmers had a combined land of 25 acres on two adjacent hills.
  • The project plan included the installation of solar pumps to continuously pump the water from the foothills to the various farmlands through distribution pipelining on a rotation basis to increase the yield and cycles of crops.
  • The solar pumps were designed depending on the pressure and water requirement. The farmlands were situated nearly 80 meters above the stream. We used a 13HP pump to lift 25000 litres of water per hour.
  • Fields on the two hills received water simultaneously on a rotation basis.
  • The water distribution runs on 2- to 3-day cycles for the farmers.
  • Drip irrigation systems were installed on both farmlands with the pressure created due to gravity.

We also provided storage facilities for the water pumped for days of low sun intensity.

Impact of the Project

  • Farming projects in India such as this affect the community, making their impact easily noticeable.
  • The community bears the initial cost, and individual cost decreases.
  • The income of farmers in the community increases, leading to lesser people having to relocate for better opportunities.
  • Installing solar equipment bypasses the need for electricity via diesel generators. It reduces operational costs.
  • Above all, such projects combine renewable energy with overall benefits to provide a community’s socio-economic growth and help save water by reducing waste.
  •  Hope you liked the project and are inspired to invest in one. You can directly contact us if you have community-driven projects as part of your CSR initiative.
